  • Although OSHA’s Air Contaminants Rule, including OSHA’s Wood Dust PELS, was struck down in AFL-CIO VS OSHA, 965 f. 2ND 962 (11TH Cir. 1992), a number of states have incorporated those provisions in their state plans. Additionally, OSHA has announced that it may cited companies under the OSH Act general duty clause under appropriate circumstances for non-compliance with these levels.

HEALTH EFFECTS DATA:

Inhalation of wood dust may cause nasal dryness, irritation and obstruction. Coughing and sneezing, sinusitis and prolonged colds have also been reported. Wood dust can cause eye irritation and/or possible respiratory reactions. Depending upon species, wood dust may cause dermatitis. Prolonged exposure to wood dust has been reported by some observers to be associated with nasal cancer. The international Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified wood dust as a nasal carcinogen in humans (Group I).

PRECAUTIONS SAFE HANDLING AND CONTROL MEASURES:

Avoid eye contact, prolonged contact with skin, and prolonged breathing of wood dust in the air.

Avoid contact with oxidizing agents and drying oils.

Avoid open flame.

Provide adequate general and local exhaust ventilation.
