Tolleson Lumber Company, Inc. is keenly
aware of the present and future value of being environmentally
committed. The following is a summary of our wood procurement and land
management practices.
Approximately ninety eight percent of the timber used in our
two sawmills are purchased on the stump from private or public
landowners. The remainder will be harvested from company lands. Fifty
percent of the aforementioned volume is purchased by company foresters
and harvested through independent loggers. Our foresters have attended
master Timber Harvester training and continuing education classes. Each
sawmill procurement office has at least two registered foresters on
staff and is required to take continuing education classes each year.
We encourage the attendance of environmental and wildlife classes when
available.
In procuring timber, if state best management practices
(BMP's) are not mentioned by the landowner or his representative, we
make all parties involved aware of the Georgia BMP's and that we will
follow those guidelines while harvesting the timber.
The other fifty percent of our needs are furnished through
core suppliers. We require the suppliers to follow the same harvesting
guidelines that we employ. Each supplier has a certified Master Timber
Harvester on the logging crew and we have current certificate on file
for each one.
Our timber comes from central Georgia and east central
Alabama. It is considered either second growth (natural) or older (35
years) planted stands. We use both clear-cut and select cut methods,
depending on the needs of a particular tract or certain requests of the
landowner. Forest consultants, Tolleson foresters or core supplier
foresters manage all of our tracts. We follow state BMP's at all
times. We are familiar with certification programs and follow many of
their guidelines but we are not third part certified at this time.
Tolleson Lumber is committed to follow sound forestry
practices, enhance wildlife, and protect habitat and endangered
species. We will do this through education, accountability support
programs and every day practice in the field.
